Ancients and Moderns: Spotlight on Homer

The 81st Anglo-American Conference of Historians is about to start at the Institute of Historical Research, on the subject ‘Ancients and Moderns’. Senate House Library is supporting the conference with a display on Homer, as a major Ancient whose influence has resonated throughout history. Often our exhibitions highlight literary holdings. The display on Homer does that too, with copies of translations by George Chapman (1611) and Alexander Pope (1720), but it’s good to expand that with art — a late-nineteenth-century production on Homeric vases — and archaeology, with one of Heinrich Schliemann’s books.
